WorldTutors: Spreading Knowledge and Compassion Across Cultures
A Tailored Approach to Tutoring
WorldTutors understands that learning is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Each student-tutor pair works together to develop a curriculum tailored to individual academic and community needs. Some focus on learning English and Math while others benefit from digital literacy. In addition to what a student learns, it’s crucial to consider how they learn. To keep learning engaging, WorldTutors encourages tutors to come up with their own materials based on student needs and interests, like movies or music. At age 12, WorldTutors’ youngest teachers help their students learn to read by engaging in Book Buddies, a shared reading-aloud program. These personalized aspects keep learning enjoyable and fosters a deeper relationship between student and tutor.
Overview
WorldTutors is a global learning organization providing volunteer-based peer-to-peer tutoring in rural communities like those in Haiti, Mexico, and Uganda. They began in 2023 when a partner in Uganda proposed connecting village students with American high school students with the hope that U.S. students would motivate the Ugandan students to take pride in their studies. That first tutoring connection was a success, paving the way for even more impactful opportunities. Now, tutors include middle school, high school, and college students, as well as a handful of national and international PhD professors. Six tutors have even been recipients of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award! With this amazing group of people, WorldTutors has continued their global expansion by keeping their sights set on their core principles. As founder Alison Barry shares, WorldTutors seeks to “[connect] people to one another to act both as mentors and tutors, [enhance] the self-advocacy of both the student and the tutor, and indirectly [improve] opportunities within each community.”

Knowledge is Transformational, Not Transactional
Learning is more than information recited by the tutor to their student. It goes beyond memorization and recall. At WorldTutors, learning is not transactional, but transformational. Many students live in rural communities with limited online access and where few attend institutions of higher learning. In these areas, knowledge is especially valuable. It enables students to achieve otherwise unattainable feats like passing college entrance exams, allowing them to enroll in a university. Some of these students return home and give back to their communities, creating a cycle of knowledge. In fact, a student who recently graduated from medical school returned home to practice medicine in her rural town. WorldTutors is proud to improve opportunities within each community they touch – this is an important goal of theirs.
Meeting Students Where They Are
When WorldTutors first connects with a community, many students are not in a position to learn. The absence of Internet, devices, and even a safe environment keeps students from the education they deserve. To mitigate this, WorldTutors provides refurbished computers, StarLink connections, and compassionate perspectives. Before meeting with their students, tutors receive cultural awareness training. For example, they’re instructed not to eat or drink on the tutoring call out of respect for their students, who live amid struggles ranging from drought to food insecurity. As their students experience these challenges, tutors provide support and patience while developing a new understanding. Additionally, feedback forms at the end of each session ensure both tutor and student can discreetly voice their compliments or concerns.
Looking Beyond Academics
The relationship between student and tutor quickly surpasses the limits of Calculus or English grammar; it becomes a genuine connection, with both parties learning from the other. Students in underserved or rural communities teach their tutors about their culture and situation. Tutors, in turn, share their culture through favorite movies, songs, or jokes. Together, students and tutors develop a sense of dignity and purpose as each person steps out of their comfort zone to do something great.
